TANJORE PAINTING
Tanjore paintings had originated in Thanjavur district in Chennai during the reign of the powerful Chola dynasty. From 16th – 18th centuries Maratha princess, Rajus communities of Tanjore, Nayaks of Vijaynagar empire and Trichy and Naidus of Madurai supported the art of Tanjore Painting. The tanjore painting adorned the interiors of the palaces and soon found their place in every household. The Saraswati Mahal library in Tanjore built by the King Serfoji II displays the famous Tanjore paintings. Most of the paintings have portrays of Child Krishna and his various pranks and paintings of other gods and goddess. The figures are made with a well rounded body and almond shaped eyes and are enclosed with archs and curtains and are made with gilded and gem- set technique where gold leaf and sparkling stones are used to highlight ornaments, dresses etc. The foils used in it are 24 carat pure gold foils.
