NILGIRI
The Nilgiri (Tamil: நீலகிரி, Badaga: நீலகி:ரி or blue mountains), often referred to as the Nilgiri Hills, are a range of mountains with at least 24 peaks above 2,000 metres (6,600 ft), in the westernmost part of Tamil Nadu state at the junction of Karnataka and Kerala states inSouthern India. They are part of the larger Western Ghats mountain chain making up the southwestern edge of the Deccan Plateau.
Location
The hills are separated from the Karnataka plateau to the north by the Moyar River and from the Anaimalai Hills and Palni Hills to the south by the Palghat Gap. The Nilgiris District of Tamil Nadulies within these mountains. Its latitudinal and longitudinal dimensions are 130 km (Latitude: 11° 08' to 11° 37' N) by 185 km (Longitude: 76° 27' E to 77° 4' E). Central location is:11°22′30″N 76°45′30″E. It has an area of 2,479 square kilometres (957 sq mi).
Conservation
The Western Ghats, Nilgiri Sub-Cluster (6,000+ km²), including all of Mukurthi National Park in the south-eastern corner of the Nilgiris, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site. The Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, which includes the Nilgiri Hills, is part of the UNESCO World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
OOTY
Ooty, is also known as "Udhagamandalam". It’s been rightly titled as the as Queen of Hills. Ooty, the headquarters of The Nilgiris district is one of the famous hill stations in India. It is situated at an altitude of 2,240 meters above mean sea level. The word Nilgiris means Blue Mountains. The highest peak is Doddabette at the height of 2623 meters. The tea estates establishments have mainly made Ooty famous. The region is beautiful because of lofty mountains, dense forests, sprawling grasslands and miles of tea gardens on the routes of Ooty. It is a land of picturesque picnic spots and had been a popular summer and weekend getaway for the British during the colonial days. There are plenty of interesting tourist spots like Botanical Gardens, Lakes, Boat houses, water falls, shooting spots, Wildlife Sanctuary, Tea estates and many more.
COONOOR
Coonoor is the second largest hill station in the Nilgiris, surrounded by tea plantations, at an altitude of 1839 metres. Its climate is milder than Ooty. It is a very popular weekend get away for the people in Coimbatore. Coonoor is essentially a small tea garden town where the weather remains pleasantly cool throughout the year. Coonoor is on the toy-train line between Mettupalayam (28 km) and Ooty. A popular pastime is birdwatching, as an extensive variety of birds can be spotted. The main attraction is the Sim's Park, a small well maintained botanical garden that has several varieties of plants. It is about 19kms to the south of Ooty and is accessible by both train and road.
KOTAGIRI
Kotagiri is situated at an elevation of around 1793m above sea level and is one of the three popular hill stations located in the Nilgiris. This picturesque hill station is bounded by verdant green tea estates and offers a number of trekking options.This old hill station has been developed around innumerable knolls and valleys. The Doddabetta Range is 22 km away. Catherine Falls, Elk Falls and Rangaswami Pillar are the major attractions near Kotagiri and you can trek to these places. Kodanad View Point offers a spectacular view of the gentle sloping hills and blue hills. There is another jungle trekking trail that leads you to a small stream of water.
CLIMATE
Ootyfeatures a subtropical highland climate under Koppen’s climate classification.Despite its location in the topics in stark contrast with most of the South India Ooty generally features Pleasantly mild condition throughout the year however night time in the month of January & February is typically chilly. Generally,the town appears to be enternally stuck in th spring season . Temperatures are relatively consistent throughout the year ; with average high temperature ranging from about 17-20 degrees Celsius’which by South Asian standards is uncharacteristically low for an all-time record high temperature. The lowest temperature was being -2 degree Celsius. The city sees an average about 1250mm of precipitation annually, with a marked drier season from December through March.Summer Temperature-25degree C to 10 degree C.Winter Temperature -21degree C to 5 degree C.
